For CFOs, fund accounting and investor relations
Start Claude for Excel on a quarter you have already closed.
Start Claude for Excel on one reconciliation or one LP report from a quarter your fund has already closed and tied out, so every answer can be checked against figures you know are right. Before real LP data goes in, have IT deploy the add-in through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and compliance read its data handling. Anthropic's own documentation says Claude for Excel is not recommended for audit-critical calculations without verification.
Claude for Excel is Anthropic's add-in that puts Claude in a sidebar inside Microsoft Excel. Anthropic's documentation says it answers questions about an open workbook with cell-level citations, adjusts assumptions while keeping formula relationships intact, finds the root cause of errors, populates existing templates and works across multi-tab workbooks. It runs on Excel on the web, on Windows with a Microsoft 365 subscription, and on Mac.
For a fund's finance team, that covers work already done in Excel: the capital account roll forward, the tie-out between the administrator's package and your own workpapers, the LP statement and its commentary. The order matters. An add-in that can modify a workbook is only as safe as the file it opens, the instruction it reads and the person who checks the result.
Setup
Which Claude plan and deployment does a fund finance team need?
Ask IT two things first: which Claude plan the firm holds, and whether AI traffic has to stay inside your own cloud.
Claude for Excel is generally available on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and its use is subject to the same usage limits as the Claude account it signs in with. For a finance team handling LP data, start on the firm's Team or Enterprise plan, so the add-in sits under your organization's settings rather than personal accounts.
An admin deploys it through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center: allow Office Store access, open Settings, Integrated apps, Add-ins, search for Claude for Microsoft 365, and assign it to specific users or groups. Assign it to the finance pilot group first. Where Office Store access is switched off, the documentation gives a custom manifest instead.
If your firm routes AI traffic through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or an LLM gateway, the add-in can be deployed without individual Claude accounts, keeping prompts and responses within your trust boundary. One trade-off: working across Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook is not supported on that path.
Data and controls
What should compliance check before LP data goes into Claude for Excel?
Start with the data handling section. Inputs and outputs are deleted from Anthropic's backend within 30 days, with stated exceptions, and chat history is stored locally in the user's browser. The add-in does not inherit custom data retention settings your organization has set. Its activity is not included in Enterprise audit logs, although for Enterprise organizations with the Compliance API enabled, add-in sessions are included in that API, in public beta.
The administrator's package arrives from outside the firm, and outside files are where Anthropic's documentation warns hidden instructions can sit.
Then the prompt injection warning. Anthropic says to use the add-in only with trusted spreadsheets, because downloaded templates, vendor files and data imports can carry hidden instructions that try to extract data or modify records. When Claude proposes a risky operation, it asks you to confirm first. Write down which files may be opened with the add-in, and put that list in your AI usage policy.
The first workbook
Should we start with LP reporting or fund accounting reconciliations?
Pick the reconciliation your team already explains every quarter, on a quarter that is closed.
Start with the reconciliation, and start by reading. Take a quarter that has been closed and tied out, make a copy, and ask Claude to explain the file: how a capital account balance was derived, where a break between the administrator's figures and your workpapers comes from, which cells drive the management fee line. Answers carry cell-level citations you can click, so a reviewer checks the reasoning against the cell itself.
| First: a closed quarter, read-only | Later: the live quarter, with edits | |
|---|---|---|
| The file | A copy of a quarter already closed and tied out, so the right answer is known. | The current quarter's working file, once the team trusts how the add-in reads it. |
| What Claude does | Explains how figures were derived and traces breaks, with cell-level citations. | Populates the next quarter's template and drafts commentary, with changes tracked and explained. |
| How you check | Compare each answer with the figure the team already signed. | A person reviews every change before the file moves on. |
| Outside files | Only spreadsheets the usage policy lists as trusted. | The same list, and confirmations read carefully when Claude proposes a risky operation. |
| Who signs | The reviewer, against the closed figures. | The same person who signs today. Final LP deliverables always get human review. |
A trusted copy
Anthropic's best practice is to start from a trusted copy before asking Claude to edit widely. Use a closed quarter, so the right answer is already known.Questions before edits
Ask it to trace and explain. When it does edit, Claude tracks and explains its changes, and it warns before overwriting existing data.Edits, reviewed
Only then let it populate the next quarter's template, with a person reviewing every change before the file moves on.
LP reporting
Where does Claude for Excel fit in LP reporting?
After the numbers are tied out. Anthropic says Claude for Excel is not recommended for final client deliverables without human review, or for audit-critical calculations without verification, and an LP statement is the kind of file both limits describe. The useful work sits around the figures: explaining what moved in a capital account, checking that a table in the letter agrees with the workbook, and drafting commentary for the person who signs it.
Claude for Excel shares context with Claude for Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, so one conversation can pull figures from a workbook into a Word memo, and Outlook drafts wait for someone to click send. On Team and Enterprise plans the cross-app setting defaults to off. Set the firm's formatting conventions once in the add-in's Instructions field, and save a finished process as a skill the team can reuse.
Who builds it
Who should set up the workflow: IT, the CFO's team or an outside engineer?
IT deploys the add-in and owns the controls. The workflow belongs to the people who run the close, because the steps of a reconciliation often live in one or two heads, and the written version is rarely how it runs. Write the process down first: the files, the order, the tolerances, who signs. Then decide which steps Claude reads and drafts, and which stay with a person.
That is the work a forward deployed engineer does with a fund's finance team: discovery on the process as it actually operates, a design, then a build your own people write and run. Our homepage describes one quarterly roll forward case this way: they review and explain what moved in hours, not days.
We start with the one process that costs your finance team the most, measured on your own volume before and after. The engineer guides, your people build, and nothing depends on us afterward.
If Claude for Excel is the wrong place to start for your close, or we are the wrong firm for it, we will say so.
Questions on Claude for Excel in fund finance
Is Claude for Excel included in our Claude plan?
Claude for Excel is generally available on the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Use of the add-in is tied to your existing Claude account and is subject to the same usage limits. Firms that route AI through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, Azure AI Foundry or an LLM gateway can deploy it without individual Claude accounts, with the available models coming from that platform.
Can Claude for Excel run macros or VBA in our fund accounting workbooks?
No. Anthropic lists data tables, and macros and VBA operations, as unsupported. Claude can sort, filter, edit pivot tables, apply conditional formatting and create data validation dropdowns, and it works across multi-tab workbooks. A reconciliation that depends on a macro needs the macro run by a person, or the step rebuilt in formulas the team can read.
Does Anthropic keep the LP data we put into Claude for Excel?
Inputs and outputs are deleted from Anthropic's backend within 30 days of receipt or generation, except in cases Anthropic's retention policy sets out, and data is cached for some hours afterward so recently closed workbooks keep their context. Chat history sits in the user's browser. The add-in does not inherit your organization's custom retention settings, which compliance should read before any LP data goes in.
Which versions of Excel does Claude for Excel run on?
Excel on the web, Excel on Windows with a Microsoft 365 subscription (build 16.0.13127.20296 or later) and Excel on Mac (version 16.46 or later). It does not run on Excel 2016 or 2019 perpetual or volume license, on iPad or on Android. Check the finance team's machines before the pilot.
Can Claude for Excel produce the final LP statement?
Anthropic does not recommend it for final client deliverables without human review, or for audit-critical calculations without verification. Use it to explain movements, check that the letter's tables agree with the workbook and draft commentary. The person who signs the statement today still signs it, with the source workbook open.
