Every engagement at By The People is delivered by the people who sold it. That is how we protect the quality of the work, and it is why we grow deliberately. Three roles are open as the engagement pipeline grows, each at a defined point.

One in New York and two in Tirana. None of them is a requisition yet, and the condition beside each one is the real thing standing between it and a post.

First

Forward Deployed Engineer

Embedded inside one team at an investment firm, working in their tools and their environment on a process that carries real volume and real consequences. The first week is spent observing rather than building. By the end of the engagement, their people can modify what you built without you.

A second embedded engagement runs concurrently with the first. Today there is one, and a second engineer would be waiting for work.

The same role, covering the earlier half of the day. Much of what you produce is picked up by someone who was asleep while you produced it, which means the handoff is written, and it has to be good enough to act on before you are available to explain it.

Opens when

The New York engineer is placed and the volume of work exceeds what one person can hold. Tirana is where the second engineer sits because the first hours of that city's day are hours nobody in New York is using.

The evaluation-heavy end of a build: the test set, the failure cases nobody has examined yet, and the second draft of the documentation. Working beside someone doing the senior version of the same job, on the same engagement, in the same week.

There are two engineers to learn the work from. There is nobody to train you here today, and hiring someone junior before there is would cost them a year of their career.

We publish conditions rather than dates, because the conditions are what we can promise. When one is met, the posting appears here first.

The schedule

Two cities, three overlapping hours.

Tirana runs six hours ahead of New York. A standard day in one city is a standard day in the other, and they intersect for three hours. Anything requiring live discussion happens in that window. Everything else is written down well enough not to need it.

Six hours apart for most of the year, and five for the few weeks each spring and autumn when the two continents change their clocks on different Sundays. The kind of detail that matters only to whoever owns the standup, which by then is you.

What the work offers

Four things that define the role.

This is demanding work for engineers who want responsibility early. These four points describe it plainly so you can decide whether it is for you.

You work in the client's environment
Client systems, client conventions, client review, and an industry with clear standards for how software changes. What you help build remains theirs the Monday after you leave, and that is the measure of it being done well.
You are the engineer in the room
You work directly with the people whose week you are changing, with the firm's principals behind you. When you do not know an answer, you say so and have it by Thursday. That directness is what earns a client's trust.
Writing is part of the engineering
The handoff, the reasoning behind each decision, and the documentation that outlives the engagement are yours. Work that others can maintain without you is the standard.
You work where the work happens
Understanding a process means watching it done, and that happens on the client floor rather than on a call. New York is on site most weeks. Tirana travels for the weeks that decide something.
