No more choosing a mode. Hand it the task.
Anthropic began merging Claude chat and Claude Cowork into one experience. You ask for what you need, and Claude decides whether it is a quick answer or a task to work through, handed back as files you can edit.

01 · What changed
What the merged Claude does.
It is rolling out gradually, starting with Pro and Max plans on web, desktop and mobile, and Anthropic says Enterprise admins will hear at least 30 days before anything changes for their organization. For a company this is the biggest change of the quarter for people who do not write code, because the hardest part of Cowork was knowing it was there.
- 1
Whole tasks
Describe the outcome: Claude searches, reads your files, runs code and puts it together. Several at once.
- 2
Keeps working when you leave
Longer tasks run in the cloud with the laptop closed. Tasks on your own files need Claude Desktop open.
- 3
Finished files
Documents, spreadsheets with working formulas, decks you can open in PowerPoint.
- 4
Your connected apps
Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365 and Slack, pulled in as the task runs.
- 5
Scheduled work
Recurring tasks, like a Monday inbox summary, run on a schedule in the cloud.
- 6
A permission setting
Manual asks before each action. Auto keeps going and runs safety checks first.
“Buying Claude is the easy part. The value comes when it’s in the hands of the people who do the work.”

02 · What it means
What it means for your seat.
In most firms we work in, a small group uses Cowork and everyone else uses Claude as a chat window. The merge removes the choice that split them. It does not remove the skill of handing off a whole piece of work, which most people have never practised.
Leadership
The ceiling on what an ordinary user can delegate just rose. Whether your firm gets the value depends on whether people learn to ask for the finished report rather than the next paragraph.
Your teams
Work that took an afternoon of copying between tools, such as pulling last quarter’s board deck and summarising what changed, becomes one request with connected apps.
Risk and compliance
Auto mode and connected apps mean Claude acts with the access the person has. Decide where Auto is acceptable and where people stay on Manual, and write it on the one page your people actually read.
Enterprise admins
You get at least 30 days’ notice before the change reaches your organization. Use them: brief the teams and settle the permission rule before people find the new behaviour on their own.

“Every engagement starts with the work itself: which tasks Claude should take on, which it shouldn’t, and how much checking each one needs.”

Facts and dates are Anthropic’s own. What it means and what to do are our view, from the firms we work with. Drafted with Claude from these sources, reviewed by Fatjon (Tony) Kalemaj and published 13 October 2026.
The short answers.
What is the difference between Claude chat and Cowork now?
In the new experience there is none. Anthropic merged them into one conversation from 16 September 2026, so Claude answers quick questions and takes on longer tasks in the same place.
Which Claude plans get the merged experience?
It is rolling out gradually, starting with Pro and Max plans on web, desktop and mobile. More plans follow, and Anthropic says Enterprise admins will hear at least 30 days before anything changes for their organization.
Can we switch back to separate Chat and Cowork?
No. Once an account has the new experience it cannot switch back to separate Chat and Cowork options. Chats, tasks, projects and settings carry over.
Is Auto mode safe to use at work?
Auto keeps Claude working without asking before each step and runs automated safety checks before it acts. Anthropic advises staying close for work with real consequences, such as sending messages or changing important files. Set a firm-wide rule for where Auto is allowed.
